Little Deer

Hello, everyone! I’ve decided that I’m going to experiment a little more with some character design concepts this year. I wanted to experiment drawing things that I’ve either been too anxious to attempt or have been having trouble with. The first of these things that I’ve been experimenting with is a design for a deer robot.

I haven’t had much practice with drawing deer, but what I do find interesting about them is that most of them are quite slim creatures. I thought that creating a deer robot would be a good way to practice drawing curves and circles as well as an animal that I haven’t drawn many times before.

The first idea I had was a robot foal. I made her body smaller than her head, trying to make the design traditionally cute. After looking at this, though, I felt she wasn’t quite finished. She was cute, but that was it. Seeing a deer, even a foal, is kind of a magical experience for me, and this design didn’t really have the same sort of “fairy forest” quality that I was going for. I thought making her a doe instead of a foal would probably make her more interesting.

The first step I took was making her neck and midsection bulkier. I also made her legs longer, widening them at the bottom. It gave her more of a fairy-tale quality when I did so – and made her look less fragile. Just some refinements on her markings and snout, and I felt like her design looked much, much better.

I’m happy with her design now! She looks more like what I intended.

Keep in mind this character is still a work-in-progress. I’m still trying to figure out her colour palette and her personality, and I may refine her design some more in the process. But so far, I’m really feeling good about her.

I’m planning on creating a few more characters and developing them here, so keep en eye out for more posts like this one this year. ☺️
